Originated by the geography of places, viral forms emerge from the subsoil stimulating a proliferation of ‘antibodies’ able to attack the diseased fabric of the contemporary city, its uneven quality, the wounds inflicted on its body, its pockets of decay.
The ‘antibodies’ are proliferating cells able to give the city that which it most lacks: meeting places, magnets that attract talent, stages of liberation of a Dionysian creative energy.
‘Inhabiting’ different heights changes the interior horizon and transforms our daily routine. Distancing oneself from the ground, even without reaching great heights or depths, provokes powerful emotions.
The viruses of Uneternal Rome are the forms and meanings of the underground world, but also the perspectives and lightness of the aerial world, freed from the routes through the urban labyrinth, unified in the look that reads their complexity, allowing several readings and a review of the signs and meanings in several directions.
Two parallel labyrinths co-exist in the density of the city but do not communicate. Our daily travels ignore the second city consisting of archaeological finds, cavities, conduits, galleries, tunnels, water courses, infrastructure and technological networks. An underground city mirrors the surface city and its needs: the space of the pits is generated by their solids; underground and railway networks connect the urban centers; computer and telephone networks support communication and knowledge; aqueducts, power lines and gas pipes innervate vital resources.
In the depth, as new dimension, it is possible to organize the numerous technological functions required by the cities of the future on several levels, to try out new public spaces marked by vertical and diagonal movements, alternatives to the historic, horizontal city. Zero height, the smooth reference level of public urban space, crumples with folds and fissures creating new spaces. An interval that excavates and encircles the line of the ground, an urban section that shows the relationships the city has established over time with the history and geography of its places.
The project identifies the places where the viral form of the underground expands on the surface, integrating with the city in elevation to revitalize the urban system. The devastatingly active ‘volcanic surfacing’ of the subsoil becomes a positive factor for Rome. The chosen places are those of the occasions that have always been lacking, volleys to be caught to relaunch an eternal city, which changes faster than the heart of a mortal.
